The need for a family with children is one of the fundamental desires of humankind. Unfortunately, that wish does not come true for all couples. Infertility in one or the other partner can complicate the path to parenthood and prevent pregnancy. Many couples suffer from involuntary childlessness. But thanks to modern medicine, there are ways to have a baby.

Among the many methods, the so-called in vitro fertilisation (IVF) has become the most established because of its high success rate. Misleadingly, the term "fertilisation in a test tube" has given the procedure a bad image. This is bad image is undeserved because the in vitro method merely imitates purely natural processes outside the body. Once the couple has decided to undergo artificial insemination, there is still the search for a suitable clinic. In view of the high success rates, it is worth taking a look at Turkey for artificial insemination.

Only two weeks after the transfer has taken place, the detection of the pregnancy hormone HCG shows whether the desired pregnancy has begun. Although theoretically possible, in Turkey, as in most Western European countries, it is forbidden to choose the sex of the baby.

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) in Turkey involves various individual steps. These include hormonal stimulation as well as minor surgical procedures. Hormones are used to suppress the woman's own hormone production and prevent natural ovulation. In our partner clinic in Turkey, the patient must therefore arrive on the 1st day of her period and spend the next ten days there for the preliminary examinations. From the 10th day at the latest, the partner must have arrived to be checked. Sperms will be collected and used for the fertilisation process.

On the 12th day, ovulation is induced and sufficient eggs are collected from the woman. The partner provides his sperm and the eggs are brought together with the sperm in a nutrient fluid. 16 to 20 hours later, it is possible to see whether fertilisation has occurred.

On the second day after the egg collection, the specialist transfers two to three of the resulting embryos into the uterus. Both partners can then leave the clinic and return to their own country. 20 days later, a blood test shows the success of the procedure. If the embryo has embedded, the pregnancy can now also be detected by ultrasound. Often the embryo's heartbeat can already be seen.

Prof. DR. Oya GÖKMEN graduated from T.E.D. in 1964 from Ankara High School. She completed her education at the Faculty of Medicine, Ankara University. After graduating from Ankara Medical Faculty in 1970, she specialised in the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at Hacettepe University and became a gynaecologist in 1975. Between 1976 and 1978, she completed her specialisation in reproductive health in Oxford and Cardiff, England, with a scholarship from the World Health Organisation. During her tenure as chief physician, she pioneered the training of many of the country's colleagues in the globally effective gynaecology programmes.
