Excess weight is a burden on increasing numbers of people. Those affected despair of their attempts to reduce weight with the help of diets, sports, or dietary changes. Because of the extreme amount of excess weight, physical activities are often already limited. Consequential damage such as high blood pressure, intervertebral disc problems, or diabetes can hardly be prevented.

For most of those affected, the only way out is to see a doctor if the joints are already damaged, diets no longer respond or metabolic disorders are responsible for the obesity. If the existing treatments fail, interventions such as gastric reduction can help severely overweight people to lose weight. As experience has shown that health insurance companies in Germany are reluctant to cover the costs of such an operation, a gastric reduction in Turkey may be the solution.

In addition to gastric sleeve surgery, there are also other procedures such as the gastric balloon, gastric bypass, or gastric band, which are performed according to the respective requirement profile of the overweight patient. Studies show that motivated patients can lose up to 70 percent of their initial weight within the first 24 months. Patients should plan on seven nights in Istanbul for gastric sleeve surgery. They will stay two nights of these at the clinic and the remainder at the hotel. Before the surgeons decide on an operation, approximately one day is allocated for a thorough check-up, during which the patient is examined to determine whether they are suitable for the procedure and also whether they are motivated to make the associated change to their lifestyle. The reason for this is that the patient must be aware of the fact that they have to radically change their diet and lifestyle.

Most frequently performed procedure is the sleeve stomach surgery in our partner clinic in Istanbul. During the procedure, which is also called sleeve resection, the surgeon removes a portion of the organ. A smaller stomach is created, which has the shape of a tube. While a normal stomach has a capacity of about two to three liters, after surgery it holds only 100 to 150 milliliters. Since the part of the stomach that also produces the hunger hormone ghrelin is removed, the patient feels full faster and is less hungry. However, the patient usually needs to take supplemental vitamin B12 after surgery because there is no longer enough intrinsic factor and stomach acid to ensure the natural absorption of the vitamin from food. The surgery itself is performed minimally invasively via laparoscopy. However, it is demanding because of the stomach sutures: these must be absolutely tight to prevent leakage.
